Welcome to Malawi’s Call!
It’s here that I will share stories from Malawi from a climate justice perspective, as well as my own story and journey towards becoming a climate justice activist. Malawi faces a number of challenges that increase its vulnerability to a changing climate and adverse weather events. I want to raise Malawi’s voice in the world, in an effort to encourage the Global North to take action, as well as to push for a scale up of climate financing and reparations.
Who am I?
My name is Simeon Kalua. I am a 24-year-old Climate Justice Activist and Permaculturist from Malawi. I completed my bachelor’s degree in Public Health at the University of Livingstonia in 2020. My goal is to explore the intersection between climate and public health, and undertake a Master’s Degree in climate change & planetary health.
In the past few years, I have experienced the effects of climate change firsthand, such as prolonged dry spells leading to low harvest in my community, and floods caused by Cyclones like Cyclone Ana (2022) and Cyclone Freddy (2023). These experiences fueled my ambition to become a climate justice activist.

Why Subscribe?
You can consider Malawi’s Call as a space for those of you who want to hear more from a country who is experiencing the effects of climate change, and to be informed from the perspective of a person from there and based there. Sometimes it seems like the Global North is largely disconnected from the Global South when it comes to climate discussions. My goal with my writing is to combine firsthand insight with what I learn during the SEED program I am currently undertaking in Norway, and start to outline for you what a just climate transition would look like from our perspective.
